What’s in the Cards

A lot of folks wonder about tarot cards in general. They’ve been around for centuries; some might claim millennia. However, regardless of their origin, the tarot is no nearly so mysterious. It’s also the basis for your average deck of playing cards. Your average individual has some level of intuition, regardless of whether or not they are actually “special.” What the tarot does, for an average but open minded person, is tap into that intuition. Each card has a general meaning, and that meaning is clarified by whether the card is upright or inverted and where in a layout it falls. Most people, who haven’t done the research, have a habit of freaking out if the Death card or Devil card comes up. That’s a surefire way to spot a newbie! Usually, these cards don’t actually indicate either, particularly if an “average Joe” is doing the reading. Their traditional meanings indicate a major change for the Death card and a charismatic but untrustworthy individual or a bad habit in the case of the Devil card. Then there’s what happens when you hand me a deck…

I take the cards, I shuffle them, then stop, when I know I should do so, and I lay them out. Then it’s like I’m watching a movie, or dreaming. And let me tell you I have some pretty bizarre dreams even when I don’t have a deck in hand! The cards are about the only way I’ve made any sense of my dreams. I know my habit of watching old movies hasn’t exactly helped. Stuff like The Raven with Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorrie, and Jack Nicholson made for some really weird REM sleep. That movie in and of itself is strange enough to start with! But I digress. As I said, I can see the most amazing things, especially with my deck laid out before me. I have scared a few people with what I’ve seen, and it’s not always the future that I see. Even with an ordinary reading, there are positions for the cards that are tied to past or present. It’s these that seem to frighten folks the most. Take for example that “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” slogan. I can see better than that fortune teller in the commercial with said slogan is supposed to. If you want me to read for you, be advised I can see any dirty laundry or skeletons you might be hiding in your proverbial closets, especially if it’s something affecting now. ( A certain politician will remain nameless). And this is why I generally only read by myself and usually for myself.

If you get a basic deck and a guide book and find you still can’t read anything worthwhile, if nothing else, they make for one heck of a colorful poker deck.
